Shirley McAlister (b. November 12, 1931) was a Democratic candidate for District 9 of the Arizona House of Representatives. The primary election was on August 24, 2010, and the general election was on November 2.[1]

McAlister served as President of the Sun City Democratic Club in 1999, 2000 and 2002. She also served as a State/Precinct Committee member of the Fiesta Precinct from 2000 to 2002. From 2001 to 2002, she was Treasurer of the Western Maricopa City Democrats. She was also Secretary of the Maricopa County Democratic Party during this time.


McAlister earned her BSHE from the University of Arkansas in 1962. She went on to receive her M.S. from the University of Missouri in 1964. She then earned her EDD from the University of Arkansas in 1969.

McAlister is a former clerk-typist for the United States Civil Service. She worked as professor/chair of apparel, textiles and interior design for Washington State University from 1980 to 1982 and for North Dakota State University from 1982 to 1993. McAlister was interim dean for the College of Home Economics for North Dakota State University from 1991 to 1992. She continued her work as North Dakota State University as development director for the College of Human Development from 1992 to 1993.

McAlister was unopposed in the August 24 primary. She was defeated by Republicans Rick Gray and Debbie Lesko in the November 2 general election.[2]

McAlister is widowed and has five children.
