This measure sought to replace the current school levy which is set to expire with one set at a rate of $3.91 per $1,000 of assessed property value for a further four years in order to help pay for general fund maintenance and operational costs in the district.[2]

The question on the ballot:

In order to replace an expiring General Fund Maintenance and Operations levy and to meet the essential educational needs of the students in the South Bend School District No. 118 shall the District levy the following excess taxes on all taxable property within the District: Collection Year: 2013-2016; Approximate Levy Rate per $1000 Assessed Value: $3.91; Levy Amount: $669,000.
