Senate passes early voting bill in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, South Carolina:

Voters in South Carolina could see a bill that would allow them to vote early in statewide elections. According to the bill, starting in 2012 if passed, voters must show photo IDs to cast a ballot before voting early in the election. Senate passed the bill 36-2, and supporters stated that the bill would increase voter participation by allowing people to vote when they wanted to.[1]

According to Senator George Campsen, "It means fewer lines for the voting public in the 2012 cycle, more opportunities to vote and greater confidence in the process." Opponents argue that the bill was created to suppress the minority vote.

The bill needs one more vote before returning to the House of Representatives.
