The South Carolina Department of Insurance is an agency of the Governor's Cabinet and is managed and operated by the director who is appointed by, and serves at the will of, the governor upon the advice and consent of the South Carolina State Senate.[1][2]
Current officeholder
The current officeholder is Raymond Farmer . He was appointed by Gov. Nikki Haley on November 13, 2012 and confirmed by the State Senate on February 15, 2013.[3]
Previously Gwen Fuller-McGriff served as acting director from Dec. 2011 to Nov. 2012 following the resignation of David Black.[4]

The director of insurance is appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the state Senate.[5]
Duties
The mission of the State of South Carolina Department of Insurance is to protect the insurance consumers, the public interest, and the insurance marketplace by ensuring the solvency of insurers; by enforcing and implementing the insurance laws of the state; and by regulating the insurance industry in an efficient, courteous, responsive, fair, and equitable manner.[6]

The South Carolina Department of Insurance is located in downtown Columbia, South Carolina, across from the State Capitol.[10]
Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, except for State legal holidays as stated in Section 53-5-10 of the South Carolina Code of Laws. [10]
