Primary: South Dakota has a closed primary system, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members. South Dakota also scheduled a June 26 primary runoff.
Voter registration: Voters had to register to vote in the primary by May 21. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 22.[2]

Cook Political Report's PVI
In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measures each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. South Dakota's at-large congressional district has a PVI of R+9, which is the 127th most Republican "district" in the country. In 2008, this state was won by John McCain (R), 54-46 percent over Barack Obama (D). In 2004, George W. Bush won the state 61-39 percent over John Kerry (D).[11]

On November 2, 2010, Kristi Noem (R) won election to the United States House. She defeated Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D) and B. Thomas Marking (I) in the general election.[12]
