South Dakota Initiated Measure 1, also known as An Act to Exempt Food from Sales and Use Taxes, was on the November 2, 2004 election ballot in South Dakota as an initiated constitutional amendment, where it was defeated.[1]
Text of the proposal
The language that appeared on the ballot:
The state collects a sales and use tax on the sale of food. Many cities and towns also collect a municipal sales and use tax on the sale of food.
Initiated Measure 1, if adopted, would exempt food from state and municipal sales and use taxes, and eliminate this source of revenue.
