Background
State term limit laws prevented incumbent Chris Nelson from running for a third term in office. He was a candidate for South Dakota's at-large seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2010, but fell to Kristi Noem in the Republican primary election.[1]

Controversies
Secretary of State Project

Nesselhuf has received both the endorsement and financial assistance of the Secretary of State Project (SOS Project), a below-the-radar 527 political organization whose purpose is to "wrestling control of the country from the Republican Party" through the process of "removing their political operatives from deciding who can vote and whose votes will count," namely the office of Secretary of State in many cases. [10] [11] The SOS Project receives its funding from the George Soros-backed Democracy Alliance. [12]
Partisan conventions
South Dakota does not use primary elections to choose candidates for the statewide offices, like secretary of state. Instead, candidates are nominated through a political party convention or an independent petition. Both candidates in the 2010 election were nominated at party conventions.
Democratic
- State Senator Ben Nesselhuf [13] received the endorsement of the South Dakota Democratic Party.[14]
Republican
- State Senator Jason Gant [15] received the endorsement of the South Dakota Republican Party.[16] over Deputy Secretary of State Teresa Bray and State Representative Thomas Deadrick.[17]
