BATON ROUGE, LA: The Louisiana Democratic Party has a new leader. Last Saturday, a New Orleans state Senator, Karen Peterson, beat out former party chairman Claude "Buddy" Leach by a vote of 85 to 75. Leach first won election to the statewide post in a 2010 special election. Under his leadership, though, the party was unable to field a well-funded gubernatorial candidate in 2011, nor did it put any candidates on the ballot in the races for lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state or treasurer.

Peterson will be responsible, among other things, for leading fundraising and campaign efforts throughout this year's election cycle. She emphasized the need for the party expand its grassroots efforts, restart idle parish committees and maximize its use of social media and other communications outlets to rebuild its base of support.[1]
