Supporters

Worth Mitchell, a Stokesdale developer, supported the measure. He said, "It allows good quality restaurants to come in and offer good paying jobs to stimulate the local economy."

Mayor Pro Tem Mickie Holbrook said, "A lot of people didn’t want the Food Lion, but two of my children got jobs there", emphasizing the potential job-creating impact of the referendum.

Opponents

Town Council member Norman Cook voted not to put the ballot measure on the ballot. He said, "I don’t understand why this is being brought up again at this time. We just had this five months ago."

Path to the ballot

Because the town council voted to put the measure on the ballot, supporters of liquor-by-the-drink don't have to circulate a petition to collect the signatures of 35% of Stokesdale’s registered voters, which would otherwise have been required to bring the question to a vote.
