Atanus was running in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Illinois' 9th District. Atanus was seeking the nomination on the Republican ticket. [2] The signature filing deadline was December 27, 2011, with the primary taking place on March 20, 2012. Incumbent Janice D. Schakowsky is seeking re-election on the Democratic ticket.

Atanus was removed from the official candidate list on January 23, 2012 [3]
