Sutherlin Charter Amendment (November 2009)

The Sutherlin Charter Amendment appeared on the November 3 ballot in Douglas County for voters in the city of Sutherlin.

The charter amendment sought to revoke a measure passed in 2008 which made it so that voter approval was needed for water rate increases proposed by the city council. This would enable the council members to set rates beyond the consumer price index without needing voter approval. Thoughts were split on the issue, some see it as a way for the council to quickly enact higher rates which are needed to ensure the quality of water service city residents expect but others see it as a potential way for the council to abuse their power and set rates far above what they should be.[1]
