A Swiss Animal Rights for a Lawyer referendum measure was voted on during a special election held March 7, 2010 in Switzerland.

This measure was defeated

The measure had proposed requiring the Swiss government to provide lawyers for animals during an abuse case. The measure was supported by a lawyer whose sole job is to defend animals, Antoine Goetschel who estimated it would be around $1 for Swiss voters to support this. Regardless, Switzerland already has strong animal rights laws and the rejection showed that this was going a step too far.[1] This measure was placed on the ballot through referendum, animal rights activists were able to obtain 140,000 signatures to get the issue voted on nationally.[2]
