Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation

The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is a minor tribe of Mission Indians hailing from around the El Cajon, California area. The Sycuan Indians are one of the four native San Diego-region tribes. The Sycuan Indians now run a profitable casino, resort and hotel on the outskirts of San Diego, California. The tribe has also recently purchased the downtown San Diego landmark U.S. Grant Hotel. It was believed that they were also purchasing property off site for development of a potential off reservation casino.
The tribe has two waste water treatment plants, “a sequential batch reactor” used for their casino, administrative buildings, and maintenance buildings. They also operate and own a modular treatment plant in a flood plain off site in one of their residential areas. The tribe operates a water treatment facility which controls their nitrate levels. Additionally, the tribe has and operates a small medical clinic, and dental office, a fire department and a small tribal police force. Ballot activism
The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is one of four tribes who stand to benefit from the 2007 Tribal Gaming Compacts. These compacts are being challenged by a coalition of labor unions and smaller, less wealthy tribes throughout California.
