Writing articles about ballot measures

  • Naming the article
  • Including hyperlinks and footnotes.
  • Strive for a neutral point of view and Avoid weasel words.
  • Long lists of supporters, opponents are to be eschewed.
  • Avoid edit wars. Deleting relevant, sourced information is often a step on the way to an edit war.
  • Before making edits that are likely to be controversial, discuss the issue on the article's talk page.
  • In general, strive for neutrality, balance, and fairness of tone.
  • Add useful information...links to campaign finance filings, links to the websites of the organizations that support and oppose the ballot measure.
  • What are the main arguments that are being made for and against? Incorporate this information in bullet-pointed lists with references to primary source material. Write about the arguments others are making, and clarify where necessary that that's what you're doing.
  • Use subsections and bullet points liberally.
  • Read articles like Proposition 93 to get ideas of what to include and for style tips.
If you sign your messages on (discussion) pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

FEC?

I took this sentence out, "It was recently cleared by the FEC in a 5-0 vote that the legislature could raise funds to fight or support the measure in increments of $20,000 from individuals which means the fight will get expensive."

Does anyone have a newspaper or other citation? This is very interesting but I couldn't find anything about it in a brief search on internet.Calgal 01:22, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Length of list of supporters

Per Ballotpedia guidelines, keep the lists of supporters/opponents shorter.Calgal 14:20, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Your right about the list having being long on the front page. However, I think you mistakenly removed the direct link to committees webpage list of prop 11 supporters. I re-added it. The in house designed page linked to was like 1/50th of what the actual listed supporters are and the direct link is the best source as it is updated more often and therefore easier to maintain and reconcile the differences. As Im sure your aware the purpose of the guidelines is so that the long list does not take up the whole page of the article not that the list is truncated to a shorter list when people view it. thanks -Hitman6999 16:29, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
