A Tarkio City Use Tax Implementation measure was on the August 7, 2012 ballot in the city of Tarkio, which is in Atchison County.

This measure was defeated

  • YES 122
  • NO 126 Defeatedd[1]

This measure sought to implement a use tax set at a rate of 2 percent on goods purchased out of state. The rate is the same as the current sales tax in the city. In January, 2012, the Missouri Supreme Court had ruled that the current use tax was unconstitutional and because the state legislature failed to pass a new tax the choice was left up to the local authorities if they wanted to implement their own use tax. City officials had stated that this would not be a new tax, it would be at the same rate as the previous use tax. Since it was not approved, city officials stated that there would be a significant loss of funds for city operations and services.[2]
