This note is about the appropriate use of edit summaries when you edit an article.

Some pointers to keep in mind:

  • As part of being a good citizen on Ballotpedia, please do use the edit summary feature.
  • Edit summaries should be descriptive enough to let others know in general terms what the nature of an edit was.
  • In your edit summary, you should follow the same general community guidelines as elsewhere on Ballotpedia. For example, don't use the edit summary to attack others or their edits.
  • If your edit is minor and virtually certain to be non-controversial, you can check the box that says "This is a minor edit."
  • Generally, the "edit summary" field is not a good place to initiate or carry on a dialogue about what is best for the article. Discussions about why you're making a change, if the change is one that a reasonable person is apt to regard as significant and/or not having achieved the consensus of other people working on the article, should generally take place on the article's talk page and should generally take place before making the change.
  • If you have more to say on the article's talk page about your edit, please add something like "See talk page" to let readers know that they can find additional discussion there.
