This is a document about the "short outcome" template. This template is primarily used to record vote totals for statewide ballot measures. For more information on that project and related writing guidelines, click here.

Code

The code below is the primary code used by most states. For states that require a supermajority vote or other requirements, refer to "special cases."

Special cases

Most states require a simple majority to approve a proposed ballot measure. In those cases, you'd use the code outlined above. In other states, however, there are special requirements.

The states below outline those requirements and the specific code to use in those instances. Note that most of the outlined codes below contain additional fields.

Florida

• Florida. For a referred (or initiated) amendment to win in Florida, it must win a supermajority vote of 60% of those voting on the question, according to Section 5 of Article XI. This change was made via Amendment 3 in 2006.

Hawaii

• Hawaii. For a referred amendment to win in Hawaii, it must win a majority vote of 50% of those voting on the question and a majority of those who cast a ballot for any office in that election.

Notable differences:

Hawaii Special

• Hawaii. For a referred amendment to win in Hawaii during a special election, it must win a majority vote of 50% of those voting on the question and a 30% of the registered voters in the state.

Illinois

• Illinois. For a referred amendment to win in Illinois, it must win a supermajority vote of 60% of those voting on the question or a majority of those who cast a ballot for any office in that election.

Massachusetts

• In Massachusetts, a proposed amendment can be passed by majority vote, provided that the total number of votes cast on the initiative equals at least 30% of the total votes cast in the election.

Mississippi

• In Mississippi, an amendment is considered approved if it receives a majority vote, provided that the total number of votes cast on the initiative equals at least 40% of the total votes cast in the election.

Nebraska

• In Nebraska, a proposed amendment becomes part of the Nebraska Constitution if it wins a majority vote and it wins the votes of at least 35% of those voting in the election for any office.

New Hampshire

• New Hampshire: A proposed amendment must be approved by 2/3rds of those voting in order to become part of the state's constitution.

Tennessee

• Tennessee. A proposed amendment in Tennessee must earn a majority of those voting on the amendment, and "a majority of all the citizens of the state voting for governor."

Utah

• Utah. A proposed amendment in Utah requires a vote of at least a "majority of the electors of the State voting at the next general election." This means that more voters can vote "yes" on a particular amendment than "no" and it still might lose, depending on how many voters altogether vote in that election.

Wyoming

• Wyoming. For an amendment to win in Wyoming, it must win a majority vote of 50% of those voting on the question anda constitutional amendment must receive a majority of the total ballots cast in the election.

Local

• Portal:Local ballot measures. Local ballot measures have a range of percentage requirement for the passage of measures.

Notable differences:

• |percent = # (Where # is any number representing a percent, ie. "60" for 60%)

Overturned measure

If a ballot measure is overturned use the format below to update the election results box. In addition to updating the box, please make sure to add a note in the "Aftermath" section about the event. (click here for those guidelines)

Notable differences:

• | overturned = if overturned, add "Yes" to this field
• | casename = if a casename is available, add the case name. For example add: State ex rel. Thomson v. Zimmerman
• | casenumber = if available, add the case number in the following format, example = 264 Wis. 644 (1953)
• | link = if available, add a link to the case. Copy and paste the URL into this field
