The Commissioner serves as head of the Department of Environment and Conservation, which is responsible for protecting and improving Tennessee's air, land and water.[1]

Authority
The office of the Commissioner of Environment and Conservation is established in the Tennessee Code.[2]
Tennessee Code - Section 4-3-502:
| The department of environment and conservation shall be under the charge and general supervision of the commissioner of environment and conservation. |
Duties
The commissioner oversees the Department of Environment and Conservation. The Department is the chief environmental and natural resources regulatory agency in Tennessee. It is responsible for regulating air pollution, water pollution, solid and hazardous waste, radiological health issues, underground storage tanks, water supply, and groundwater.
Additionally, the department is responsible for managing 54 state parks and 82 state natural areas, and provides support and assistance to local governments.[3]

The budget for the Department of Environment and Conservation in Fiscal Year 2011-2012 was $358,265,300.[4]
