NASHVILLE, Tennessee: On April 23, the Tennessee State Senate concurred with a House bill, criminalizing harm to developing embryos. Similar to an act past last year criminalizing harm to fetuses, the law would permit additional assault or murder charges for harm inflicted on embryos during assaults against pregnant women. Opponents worry that law could result in criminal charges when neither the woman nor the assailant was aware of the pregnancy. Backers of the bill argue that it will promote a greater respect for life in the culture. The bill now moves to Governor Bill Haslam (D).[1]
