Johnson serves in the National Guard, where he was formerly commander of the medical detachment and now works as a state surgeon. He is now a colonel in the Ohio Army National Guard. He is also the director of the Family Practice Residency at southern Ohio Medical Center and an Assistant Dean of Ohio University's College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has his own private practice as a physician in Lucasville.
Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in History from Ohio University and his medical degree from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
