Wanzek began his political career as treasurer for the Noonlake Township. Later, in 1992, he served as a representative for the North Dakota state House of Representatives until 1994. In 1994, Wanzek began serving on the North Dakota State Senate. In 2003, his service ended, but he was elected again in 2007.
Wanzek's professional experience includes farming, ranching, and conducting business.
Terry Wanzek earned his Bachelor's degree at Jamestown College in 1979 and later graduated from the Texas A&M University Executive Program for Agricultural Procedures.
