Sci Fi Channel warns of voting machine hacking [1].
As the upcoming presidential election remains topical for all Americans, The Sci Fi Channel has exposed the possibility of a hacker tampering with state voting machines across the nation.
The Background
SciFi.com posted a map offering users to click on their homestate to learn the potential for error, either through hacked technology or human innacuracy. Based on voting machine data from Election Data Services, a political consulting firm, the map notes which states use machines most susceptible to hacking or error [1].
SciFi.com senior vice president, Craig Engler, says that because The SciFi Channel's audience is so tech-savvy, they have been steadily inquiring about the security of their electronic votes. In response, the map was created.
Results
The color-coded map explains that "most of the country (56%) will cast ballots into optical scanners, which are more vulnerable to hacking than antiquated voting gear like punch-card readers. Only electronic models are more vulnerable than optical scan [2]." States coded with orange or red are at the most vulnerable, with most or all voting mechanisms being electronic.
Disclaimer
In efforts to protect themselves, and maintain that their research was theoretical, SciFi.com wants readers to know that they are "in no way saying your vote is likely to be hacked or spoiled. There has never been a proven case of widespread technological voter fraud in any national U.S. election [2]."
