Theresa Becenti-Aguilar is a former member of the New Mexico Public Service Commission and served as chair, representing District 4. Becenti-Aguilar was appointed by former Gov. Bill Richardson in July 2010 and elected in November 2010 to serve a full four-year term.[1] She sought re-election in 2014 but lost to Lynda Lovejoy in the Democratic primary on June 3, 2014.


Becenti-Aguilar is a member of the Navajo Nation. She began her professional life as an intern with the Federal Bureau of Land Management in 1988. Following this, she worked for Attorney General Tom Udall for nine years and followed with him when he was elected to the U.S. Congress. In 2006, she was appointed the first Native American Liaison for the Public Regulation Commission by Gov. Bill Richardson.[1]

Becenti-Aguilar served in this position from her appointment by Gov. Bill Richardson in July 2010 until December 2014. She was elected in November 2010 to serve a full four-year term but lost during her re-election bid.[1]

Becenti-Aguilar ran for re-election to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission in 2014, but lost in the June 3, 2014, primary to former New Mexico Senator Lynda Lovejoy.[2]
