Bledsoe earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Louisiana State University. He later received his master’s from the University of Arkansas, and then his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska. He is a former college professor at Wayne State University.

Recall effort
A Republican group started a recall campaign against Bledsoe and fellow Democratic state Reps. Phil Cavanagh and Dian Slavens in the fall of 2011. Early in January 2012, attorney and GOP strategist Stu Sandler said they would be suspending all three recalls.[9]

Bledsoe currently resides in Grosse Point City with his wife, Dr. Mary Herring, a professor at Wayne State University, and their daughter Daisy.[10]
