Hennessey earned his BS from Saint Joseph's University in 1969. He went on to receive his JD from Villanova University in 1972.
Hennessey worked as a Public Defender for the Public Defenders Office from 1973 to 1992. He also worked as Municipal Solicitor from 1978 to 2003. He has worked as an attorney for Hennessey and Hennessey since 1976.
In 1993, Hennessey joined the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He has served in that position since, representing the 26th District.

Hennessey ran in the 2012 election for Pennsylvania House District 26. Hennessey ran unchallenged in the Republican primary on April 24 and defeated Mike Hays (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012. [1][2]
2010
Hennessey won re-election to the 26th District Seat in 2010. He defeated Jonathan Jenkins in the primary election, receiving 3,407 votes while Jenkins received 1,894. Hennessey defeated Fern Kaufman in the general election on November 2, 2010.[3]
