Tomblin leads fundraising efforts in race for West Virginia governor
April 30, 2012
CHARLESTON, West Virginia: Earlier this month, we reported on the campaign finance figures for each of this year's four gubernatorial candidates. At that time, incumbent Earl Ray Tomblin (D) had a clear lead over Republican Bill Maloney. With the passing of another filing deadline last Friday, Tomblin's fundraising edge is growing exponentially.
The most recent reports cover the period from March 31 through April 22 - less than four weeks. In that time, Tomblin received $124,801.25 in total monetary contributions[1] while Maloney reported less $35,975.12.[2] Tomblin not only out-raised Maloney by a factor of almost 3 and a half - he spent more money this period than Maloney raised.
But the two frontrunners have time on their side. Though the primary election is just a week away, Tomblin and Maloney can save their coffers for the general election - neither candidate is facing well-funded primary opposition: Arne Moltis, who is challenging Tomblin in the Democratic primary, reported $185 in both contributions and expenditures, bringing his campaign chest back to $0,[3] and Ralph William Clark, Maloney's Republican challenger, spent $10,246.19 without raising any funds during the reporting period.[4]
