Two days after being re-elected, MS state Sen. Tollison switches parties

OXFORD, Mississippi: Rumors began to fly early this morning following the announcement that the Mississippi Republican Party would be holding a press conference "to announce a major development for Republicans in the Mississippi Senate."[1] By Noon the consensus among bloggers and news outlets was that Democrat Gray Tollison, a 15-year veteran of the state Senate, would be switching parties.[2] They were right.
At the 4 p.m. CT press conference, Tollison officially became a Republican member of the Senate,[3] increasing their majority to 31-21. On Tuesday, Tollison won re-election to the District 9 seat as a Democrat unopposed. He was originally slated to face Republican Todd Wade in the general election, but Wade was removed from the ballot by the state Election Commission back in September for failing to be a qualified elector of the state for four years.[4]
