According to the New York Times race ratings in October 2012, one of the nine districts was considered to be in play, District 8.[2]
WIBC said the 2nd District and the 9th District were more solidly republican after redistricting, while District 8 was less so. WIBC also said Republicans Jackie Walorski and Todd Young were expected to take the 2nd and 9th districts, respectively, and Larry Bucshon was expected to keep his seat in the 8th District.[3]
The Center for Voting and Democracy (Fairvote) projected that Democrats would win two districts while Republicans would win three seats. It did not make a projection for the remaining four districts.[4]
Primary competitiveness
Indiana had the 11th most competitive congressional primaries in 2012, with 77.78% of major party primaries having been contested (14 out of 18). The national average was 54.31%.
