Primary: Arizona has a closed primary system, in which the selection of a party's candidates in a primary election is limited to registered members of that party.

Race background
Incumbent Jon Kyl (R), first elected in 1994, did not seek re-election in 2012. The race to fill his seat drew a slew of hopefuls - mostly Republican - to the primary election, which took place on August 28th. After the primary, four candidates remain in the running for the Class 1 open seat: Richard Carmona (D), who ran unopposed in his party's primary following the withdrawal of his only challenger, Republican nominee and contested primary victory Jeff Flake, and two third party challengers, Sheila Bilyeu (Libertarian), and Ian Gilyeat (Independent).
Flake scored a decisive win in the Republican primary, but at the expense of millions of dollars, thanks to the impressive fundraising performance of opponent Wil Cardon. Although Arizona is a Republican state and Flake is considered the front-runner for the open seat, Democratic nominee Carmona cannot be counted out. His background as former surgeon general in the Bush administration, a Vietnam war hero and "boot-straps Hispanic" indicate strong sleeper contender potential.[9]
The National Republican Senatorial Committee has started running ads after the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's decision to begin running TV ads.[10]
Republicans say that they still feel optimistic about the race, but Flake is being outspent and polls have shown a tight race.[10]
Competitiveness
An analysis of 2012 Senate elections published by The New York Times rated the Arizona Senate race as leaning Republican.[9]
