Primary: Delaware had a closed primary system, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election was limited to registered party members.
Voter registration: Voters had to register to vote in the primary by August 18 (August 27 for overseas and military citizens); if they switched parties, they had to do so by May 25. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 13 (October 22 for overseas and military).[2]

Race background
Democratic incumbent Tom Carper, who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, ran for re-election in 2012. He defeated one challenger, Keith Robert Spanarelli, in the Democratic primary on September 11th. Carper went on to face Republican nominee Kevin Wade (who was unopposed in his party's primary), Alexander Pires (Independent) and Andrew Richard Groff (Green Party) in the general election on November 6, 2012.

Election history
2010
On November 2, 2010, Chris Coons won election to the United States Senate. He defeated Christine O'Donnell (R), Glenn A. Miller (I), James W. Rash, Jr. (L), Maurice F. Bourgeois (I) and Samtra Devard (I) in the general election.[28]
2006
On November 7, 2006, Tom Carper won re-election to the United States Senate. He defeated Jan Ting (R) and William E. Morris (L) in the general election.[29]
