Primary: Ohio has a mostly closed primary system, in which voters must vote in the same party's primary as in the previous election, or register with the other party to switch.

Voter registration: Voters had to register to vote in the primary by February 5. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 7.[1]

Incumbent: The election will fill the Class 1 Senate seat, which is currently held by Sherrod Brown (D). First elected in 2006, Brown is running for re-election in 2012.

On November 2, 2010, Rob Portman won election to the United States Senate. He defeated Lee Fisher, Michael L. Pryce, Eric W. Deaton, Daniel H. LaBotz, and Arthur T. Sullivan in the general election.[27]
