Urbandale School District Tax Levy, 2009
The measure, if it had been enacted, would have implemented a physical plant and equipment tax levy, translating to at most a $1.34 tax per $1,000 of taxable property value in the district limits. According to supporters of the tax levy, the money collected from the tax levy would have been used to for the approximately $19.5 million in maintenance for the school. Lack of money has been cited by school officials as a reason for the deteriorating buildings and other maintenance needs. According to Urbandale Superintendent Greg Robinson: "The needs are still there, obviously. I think it's going to be up to the new board to make difficult decisions ... and try the best they can, given the resources they have available. I certainly think this is a difficult economic time, but am fearful because we will be facing future cuts from the legislature."
Robinson stated the result of the vote leaves the district with tough decisions, such as taking money from instruction to pay for maintenance.
