Hi, my name is Kyle Maichle and I am a Technical Researcher and Writer on Ballotpedia.
I research the nuts and bolts of state laws regarding campaign finance, school bond and tax votes, and other technical issues. These laws are complex, differ from state-to-state, and can be hard for voters to learn about. My role is to help readers understand their state's laws on these critical issues involving democracy.
In 2009, my research on Ballotpedia made it possible for people in Maine, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, and Washington State to learn about how their state campaign finance laws affect ballot initiative campaigns. Two major lawsuits in Washington State and Maine on campaign contribution limits days before a critical off-year election illustrate the significance of understanding these laws. I also researched in-depth about Detroit Proposal S in 2009 as the Motor City had one of the largest school bond referendums in U.S. history, where voters were asked to approve over $500 million in new bonding. Through my work, I was able to help provide Detroit voters with a resource on how this referendum might affect a city that has already been greatly impacted by the effects of the recession.
Before coming to Ballotpedia, I was an office intern for Americans for Prosperity in Wisconsin, researching complex policy topics in the Summer of 2007. After my internship, I was a Wisconsin College Programs Coordinator with Americans for Prosperity during the 2007-2008 school year. In 2008, I first started working on [[Judgepedia][ with both the Lucy Burns Institute and the Sam Adams Alliance. I continued on Judgepedia until the Summer of 2009 when I started to work on Ballotpedia.
I grew up in Appleton, WI and Loveland, CO before later graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008 with my Bachelor's Degree in Consumer Science along with an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts from Madison Area Technical College in 2005. Outside of being a researcher I like sports. I am an avid Denver Broncos, Milwaukee Brewers, Wisconsin Badgers, Marquette Golden Eagles, and Chicago Blackhawks fan. Also, I enjoy traveling, running -- I run in some long distance races every year -- and being with friends.
