The Utah Attorney General by Appointment Question did not make the 2012 ballot in the state of Utah as a legislative referral. The measure would have allowed the Governor of Utah to appoint the Utah Attorney General. Under current law, the state attorney general is chosen by the voters. The measure was proposed by State Senator Stephen Urquhart. According to Urquhart, when stating why his proposal would prevent conflicts between campaign donors and future attorneys general: "It creates issues when the one person who will make prosecutorial decisions is soliciting funds from the people or companies who may be prosecuted."[1]
However, current attorney general Mark Shurtleff disagreed and categorized the proposal as "dumb". Shurtleff also claimed: "Most people want somebody who is an independent watchdog", instead of someone who is "corporate counsel" for the governor.
