The Utah gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2012. Declarations of candidacy were due to the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Utah between the 2nd and 3rd Friday in March, that is, between March 9 and 16, 2012. Candidates paid a $536 filing fee and minor party and independent candidates additionally had to turn in 1,000 signatures. Write-in candidacies had to be declared no later than 30 days prior to the election.

In Utah, candidates for the two major parties are selected at statewide party conventions, with a primary election occurring only in the event that a candidate does not receive at least 60% of the convention delegate vote. Third party candidates are nominated during a traditional primary election, which was held on June 26, 2012.

Incumbent Gary Herbert and running mate Greg Bell ran successfully for re-election on November 6, 2012, defeating Peter Cooke and Vince Rampton (D) and two pairs of third party challengers with over 68% of the total vote.[1]

In July 2011, polling indicated that Herbert would have no trouble getting re-elected unless he were to face Congressman Jim Matheson.[2] Matheson, though, opted to run for Congress in Utah's newly created 4th District, which he ultimately won. At the statewide Republican Party nominating convention in late April, Herbert captured 63 percent of the Republican delegates, beating out five other candidates for his party's nomination.[3] At the Democratic Party's convention, Peter Cooke and his running mate Vince Rampton were unopposed and easily won their party's nod.[3]

Though the Democrats and Republicans select their gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial candidates during their statewide convention in Utah, third party candidates are still chosen in the primary elections. The two pairs of major party candidates were met in November's general election by Libertarian Party candidate Ken Larsen and his running mate Rob Latham, along with Kirk Pearson (Utah) of the Constitution Party, who defeated Brandon Nay in the June 26 primary, and Pearson's running mate Tim Alders.
