Jackson earned his BS from the University of Colorado in 1964. He then received his MA from Arizona State University in 1970. He went on to become an Education Specialist at Auburn University in 1984.
Jackson was a Businessman/Journalism Teacher at Carbon High School from 1964 to 1970. He then worked as a Business Instructor for the University of Alaska from 1970 to 1972. He also worked as a Vocational Curriculum Specialist for the State of Alaska from 1972 to 1991. From 1991 to 1996 he was School Superintendent for Flathead Christian School. He has been a rancher since 1996.
Jackson has been a member of the Republican Central Committee since 1996. He served in the Montana State House of Representatives from 1998 to 2006. He joined the Montana State Senate in 2007. He has served in that position since, representing the 5th district.
