Authority
The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources is established in Title 3, Chapter 51, Section 2802 of the Vermont State Code.

Qualifications
There are no specific qualifications for this office.
Appointments
The secretary is appointed by the governor, with the advice and consent of the state senate, and serves as the pleasure of the governor.[2]
Vacancies
By statute, the secretary, with the approval of the governor, shall designate their executive assistant or a commissioner to act in the event of a vacancy or in his or her absence.[3]
Duties
The secretary heads the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, which is responsible "for protecting Vermont's environment, natural resources and wildlife and for maintaining Vermont's forests and state parks."[1] The specific duties of the secretary are outlined in Title 3, Chapter 51, Section 2825 of the Vermont State Code:
- coordinate the activities of the various departments and divisions of the agency for the proper development, management and preservation of Vermont's natural resources
- develop policies for the proper and beneficial development, management, and preservation of resources in harmony with the state comprehensive planning program
- promote the effective application of these policies by the departments and divisions affected
- may direct the commissioner of finance and management to pay monies from the outdoor recreation land and water conservation fund to state agencies or to a municipality for recreational projects in accordance with the conditions of Public Law 88-578
- may enter into contracts and agreements with agencies of the United States and furnish to the agencies reports and information necessary to enable their officials to perform their duties under Public Law 88-578, and amendments thereto
- may delegate authorities and duties assigned to him or her by statute[4]
