MONTPELIER, Vermont: Yesterday, Gov. Jim Douglas waived his right to veto legislation that moved the state's primary election date up to August 24. Normally scheduled for September 14, the primary election date legislation was proposed to provide election officials the ability to send ballots to voters serving overseas. The new change complies with a federal mandate to provide 45 days before a general election to out of state voters. However, opponents of the change argue that the change is a political maneuver to extend the time between the primary and general election.[1]
