Viewpoint: ACORN threatens honest elections. Gary Palmer, president of the Alabama Policy Institute, argues that the activist group ACORN engages in voter registration and voter turnout activities that undermine fair elections. He cites allegations that the group bribed a voter with drugs, and that it has registered "voters" named Dick Tracy and Mary Poppins.[1]
Palmer argues that ACORN is using illegal tactics to influence this year's election
Palmer cites a case in which Nevada election officials found an ACORN voter list that included members of the Dallas Cowboys, and a CNN report that officials in Lake County, Indiana, found that thousands of registration forms turned in by ACORN were fraudulent. The most significant case may be Ohio. A federal court has upheld a ruling requiring the Ohio Secretary of State to set up a system that will verify that newly registered voters are eligible to vote.[1]
