Current officeholder
The current officeholder is Jacqueline Cunningham. Cunningham was appointed by the State Corporation Commission on December 1, 2010. She officially succeeded Alfred W. Gross on January 1, 2011.[2]
Authority
The position of Insurance Commissioner is established by Title 12.1, Chapter 3 of the Virgina Code:[3]
"...the employee or agent who is placed by the Commission at the head of the bureau or division through which it administers the insurance laws shall be designated "Commissioner of Insurance," and they and all deputies, agents, and employees used in such bureau or division shall be appointed by the Commission."

The commissioner is appointed by the state corporation commission.[3]
Duties
According to the office website, the duties charged to the Virginia Bureau of Insurance include the regulation of insurance and/or real estate settlement companies, agencies and agents on behalf of Virginia citizens.[4]
Compensation
In 2011, the Virginia Commissioner of Insurance was paid an estimated $142,425, according to the Council of State Governments.[5]
