Current officeholder
The current officeholder is Doug Domenech.[1] He was first appointed on January 17, 2010.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Domenech was the Senior Vice President of Artemis Strategies; a Washington, DC based bipartisan government relations and strategic communications firm.
Authority
Title 2.2, Chapter 2, Section 215 of the Code of Virginia establishes the position of Secretary of Natural Resources:
| The position of Secretary of Natural Resources (the Secretary) is created. The Secretary shall be responsible to the Governor for the following agencies: Department of Conservation and Recreation, Department of Historic Resources, Marine Resources Commission, Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Virginia Museum of Natural History, and the Department of Environmental Quality. |
Appointments
Title 2.2, Chapter 4, Section 200 of the Code of Virginia authorizes the governor to appoint the secretaries of: state, agriculture and forestry, education and natural resources, among others. The appointments are subject to confirmation by the state General Assembly and the appointees, with the exception of the secretary of state, "hold office at the pleasure of the Governor."[2]

The budget for the Secretary of Natural Resources's Office in Fiscal Year 2012 was $691,029.[3]
Compensation
In 2011, the Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources was paid an estimated $152,793, according to the Council of State Governments.[4]
