Wall ran for Texas Railroad Commission in 2012. He defeated Thomas Nance III for the Libertarian nomination at the party's state convention on June 9.[1]

Beryl Burgess, Warren Chisum, Christi Craddick, Joe Cotten, Roland Sledge and Becky Berger sought the Republican nomination. Since no candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote getters - Chisum and Craddick - faced off in a runoff election on July 31,[2] which Craddick won.

Dale Henry ran as a Democrat and Chris Kennedy for the Green Party. Craddick won the general election on November 6, 2012.[3]

Incumbent Buddy Garcia (R) was appointed to serve in the seat until the general election and did not run for election.[4]
