Voting machines in Tennessee switch votes
From Ballotpedia
October 23, 2008
At least three voters in Tennessee have complained of voting machines switching their votes. In Decatur County, Tennessee, voters complained of touch screen voting machines registering their votes for Republican John McCain as votes for Democrat Barack Obama. Voters in three counties in West Virginia complained of this same problem last week, except their votes for Barack Obama were being registered as votes for John McCain. Using touch screen voter [1]
Causes
The machines that have been causing trouble were all iVotronic touch-screen machines made by Election Systems & Software. ES&S says some of the problems have to do with calibration of the screens and voters not touching the screen in the correct area (center of the box). This is the same company that had trouble with voting machine calibration in 2006 in Sarasota County, Florida. However, there are several times during the voting process that voters can go back and change their selection, and the voting machines in West Virginia have a paper trail that can be reviewed before votes are official.
