Hurt ran for re-election in the 2012 election for Kentucky House of Representatives District 37. He lost to Jeffery M. Donohue in the Democratic primary on May 22, 2012. The general election took place on November 6, 2012. [2][3]

2010
Hurt faced Jeff Donohue in the general election on November 2. However, a judge ruled Donohue ineligble for failing to acquire the necessary number of signatures. Donohue's name appeared on the ballot, but his votes did not count.[4] Hurt won the election with 3,437 votes. [5] Democratic incumbent Ron Weston did not seek re-election.
Hurt ran unopposed in the May 18 Republican primary election.
