I-200 prohibited government entities in Washington from discriminating or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.
The question asked on the ballot was, "Shall government be prohibited from discriminating or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in public employment, education, and contracting?"
Background
I-200 was filed on March 26, 1997 by Scott Smith and Tim Eyman. 280,511 signatures were filed and the measure was certified on January 21, 1998. The Legislature chose not to act on it, and as provided by the state constitution, the measure was then submitted to the voters.
I-200 was the first of many ballot initiatives sponsored by Tim Eyman.
