Initiative 593 or I-593, an Initiative to the People, was on the November 2, 1993 ballot in the State of Washington, where it was approved.

I-593 was known as the Three Strikes Initiative. The question was, "Shall criminals who are convicted of 'most serious offenses' on three occasions be sentenced to life in prison without parole?"

  • Yes: 1,135,521 Approved
  • No: 374,567

Path to the ballot

The language for the measure was filed on January 6, 1993 by Ida Ballasiotes of Mercer Island.

290,613 signatures were submitted and the Washington Secretary of State deemed that there were sufficient signatures to put I-593 to a vote of the people.
