A Food Products Exempt from Sales Tax, Initiative 345 was on the November 8, 1977 ballot in the State of Washington as an Initiative to the People, where it was approved.

The question asked on the ballot was, "Shall most food products be exempt from state and local retail sales and use taxes, effective July 1, 1978?"

  • Yes: 521,062 (54%) Approved
  • No: 443,840 (46%)

Path to the ballot

Initiative 345 was filed on March 30, 1977 by J. Linsey Hinand. Hinand was the chairperson of the "Coalition Opposing the Sales Tax on Food of Seattle." 168,281 signatures were submitted to qualify I-345 for the ballot.
