OLYMPIA, Washington: Last week Gov. Chris Gregoire signed a "ballot design" measure in an effort to clarify state election ballots. The legislation was developed following the November 3, 2009 statewide general elections after confusion ensued in King County regarding a cluttered ballot design. According to officials about 40,000 voters didn't vote on Initiative 1033 because of the confusion. State election officials report that the incident didn't affect the final outcome of I-1033. The new legislation requires a clearer distinction between instructions and the voting area. The clear ballot design takes effect June 2010.[1][2]
