Washington House of Representatives
Elections for the office of Washington's State House of Representatives were held in Washington on November 2, 2010.

The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in these elections was June 11, 2010. The primary election day was August 17, 2010. The enactment of Initiative 872 in 2004 means that in the August 17 primary, the top two vote-getting candidates in each primary contest, regardless of party, moved on to the final November 2 vote.

Washington State Representatives serve a two-year term and are not subject to term limits. All members are up for election on even years. Of the 98 seats up for re-election, incumbents ran in 82 of them.

Initiative 872, passed in 2004, dictates that the top-two vote getters in each primary move onto the November 2 contest, regardless of party. This means that an election on November 2 might feature two Democratic candidates and no Republican, or two Republicans and no Democrat and so on for the various other permutations that are available when one considers independent and minor party candidates as well.

Although there are no party primaries in the State of Washington, according to the Washington Secretary of State, "Each candidate for partisan office may state a political party that he or she prefers. A candidate's preference does not imply that the candidate is nominated or endorsed by the party, or that the party approves of or associates with that candidate."

According to the Seattle Weekly, "Many other states have erected hurdles to exclude minor parties, including signature requirements and other thresholds. Washington State, on the other hand, is pretty much wide-open about letting candidates and parties on the ballot. It's a new and unique system that seeks to provide voters with information. It's basically a non-partisan voting system that allows candidates to send a message to voters in sixteen characters or less."[3] As a result, there are more parties in the State of Washington, and candidates for state representative who affiliate themselves with minor parties, than in any other state except New York which because of its practice of fusion voting provides an incentive for the existence of a plethora of smaller political parties.
