Investigators will be monitoring polling places across Kentucky on Election Day to guard against voting improprieties

Attorney General Jack Conway said about a dozen investigators from his office, as well as state police troopers and FBI agents, will be watching for irregularities and investigate voter complaints on November 4. “We need Kentucky voters to be our eyes and ears on Election Day,” Conway said.[1]

Past Election Problems

Historically, Kentucky elections have been filled with allegations of fraud, such as accusations that people paid cash or even traded whiskey for votes.[1]

2006

Two years ago, more than a dozen people were charged in Bath County in a scheme to pay poor residents to vote for particular candidates. Among those charged were candidates for judge-executive, county attorney and sheriff, all of whom were either convicted or pleaded guilty.[1]

January

Kentucky businessman Phillip Dufour pleaded guilty to making illegal campaign contributions to candidates in the 2007 governor’s race. Dufour worked for state road contractor Elmo Greer & Sons. He paid $10,000 fine, and Elmo Greer and Sons paid $250,000 to cover the cost of the investigation.[1]

June

Knott County Judge-Executive Randall C. Thompson and three other local officials were convicted in a scheme to pave private driveways and repair private bridges in exchange for votes. The previous Knott County judge-executive, Donnie Newsome, served 16 months in federal prison after being convicted of election fraud in 2003.[1]

July

Pineville Mayor Bob Madon and his son Brent Madon were indicted on charges of trading cash and drugs for votes in a 2006 election. Bob Madon has pleaded not guilty, and Brent Madon pleaded guilty.[1]

Report Irregularities

Conway urges anyone who sees any "irregularities, both large and small,” to report them. To report election irregularities, call the attorney general’s election fraud hot line at 1-800-328-8683[1]
